product description
Sodium Hydroxide for Industrial Use: Sodium hydroxide (NaOH, CAS 1310-73-2), also known as caustic soda, is a strongly alkaline chemical used in chemical manufacturing, pulp and paper processing, textiles, soaps, and industrial cleaning.
Moisture and Carbon Dioxide Absorption: Solid sodium hydroxide is deliquescent, absorbing atmospheric moisture and eventually dissolving. It also reacts with carbon dioxide to form sodium carbonate, reducing product purity. These properties require protection during storage.
Water Solubility and Heat Release: Sodium hydroxide dissolves readily in water, releasing substantial heat. Improper dilution can cause rapid heating and corrosive splashing. Dilution must follow approved procedures with suitable equipment and protective measures.
Strong Corrosivity: Sodium hydroxide causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Dust or mist can injure the respiratory tract. Use appropriate ventilation, chemical-resistant gloves, protective clothing, and eye and face protection according to the SDS.
Chemical Incompatibility: Contact with acids can produce a vigorous exothermic reaction. Sodium hydroxide also reacts with certain metals, including aluminum and zinc, releasing flammable hydrogen gas. Use compatible handling equipment and containers.
Packaging and Storage: Store in tightly closed, compatible containers in a dry, designated corrosives storage area. Protect solid products from moisture and carbon dioxide, and keep separate from acids and incompatible materials. Product form, concentration, purity, and packaging should be confirmed before ordering.
